“I don’t feel like it today, I’ll do it tomorrow.”
From the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to sleep, we are making decisions. What to eat for breakfast, what content to “like” on social media, whether to go to the gym, what our child wears for the day, what they have for lunch, what you have for lunch etc – it’s tiring!
Decision fatigue is real, and is most likely holding you back from truly getting where you want to be. Mastery of anything means it has to be automatic. The best in the world at anything just do it more than anyone else. Michael Jordan held point scoring records because he took more shots than anyone else, and was the first one to practice, and the last one to leave.
Later does not equal done, so how do we eliminate “later” from our vocabulary? Leave less things to chance, actively cut down on the decisions you make each day.
A few weeks back, I was chatting with a client who was feeling the effects of an inconsistent period in the gym. Soreness, lack of energy & frustrated. He runs his own business with a couple of staff, has 3 active kids and is a committed family man. Juggling all this, we set a “realistic” goal of 2-3 times per week for him to make it to the gym. Problem with our “realistic” goal, he was struggling to hit it, he was left with a decision to make.
“I just need to get in here more” was the line that made me think, we need to set a more aggressive goal, get him in the gym 5 days a week, then it’s not something that gets left to chance, he finds a way and gets it done.
The outcome? He has not missed a regular session since.
Narrow your focus back to your priorities. There are plenty of distractions such as social media, Netflix etc that take our attention, have us making decisions/judgements that just aren’t worth our time.
Decide on 1 priority today & determine 1 action that you can take each day to chip away at that priority. It could be a commitment to move intentionally for 20 minutes every day, maybe it’s to add an extra cup of veg to your dinner each night – keep it simple.
Today our 6 week Next Level Challenge kicks off, our habits-based challenge that gets you unstuck and performing at a higher level. We help you identify the habits that you need to master to hit your goals, and more importantly maintain that mastery to keep you on that higher level.
