These days, “wellness” is being sold on some kind of mythical level — complicated, overwhelming, and often unrealistic. Whether it’s extreme diets, rigid routines, or endless gadgets, a lot of what’s pushed by so-called experts just doesn’t fit into real life — especially for busy adults juggling careers, kids, and everything else.
And ironically, as our collective health declines, the voices pushing extreme approaches seem to get louder.
So, what does wellness actually mean to me?
For me, wellness is about staying strong, mobile, and mentally sharp so I can live life on my terms. Here’s my simple take:
- I want to be pain-free.
- I want to keep up with my kids — and one day, my grandkids.
- I want to stay strong and above average for my age in key strength and conditioning benchmarks.
- I want to fuel my body with mostly nutritious, whole foods.
- I want a healthy relationship with food, alcohol, and exercise — nothing obsessive, just consistent.
That’s it. No silver bullets, no crazy routines. Just a commitment to doing the basics well.
The Reminder I Didn’t Ask For
A few weeks ago, I got knocked flat by a bug — the sickest I’ve been in years. It started with a scratchy throat and low energy, then ramped up quickly into full-blown body aches, stiffness, and exhaustion. I had to take a few days off work and training — and honestly, I wasn’t much fun to be around.
But during that forced downtime, a realisation hit me: for some people, that’s not a “bad week” — that’s every day.
Constant pain, stiffness, fatigue — they’re living in bodies that feel like they’re fighting them 24/7. And when that’s your normal, staying active, eating well, and staying positive becomes a daily battle.
That gave me two powerful reminders:
- Personally, I’m grateful. At 47, I don’t “feel my age” — and I never want to take that for granted.
- Professionally, I’m lucky. I get to help people improve their quality of life every day through movement, strength, and sustainable habits.
Getting Stronger Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
At GSD Performance, we’ve made it our mission to help everyday people in the Hills District build real wellness into their lives. That’s why two years ago, we moved away from the old-school group training model and created something better.
Here’s how it works now:
- Monday to Thursday, our clients train in small group personal training sessions. Each program is tailored to their goals, current fitness level, time availability, and any life challenges they’re juggling. You train alongside like-minded people, with support and guidance from your coach every step of the way.
- Fridays and Saturdays, we go All In — our group training sessions where the energy is high and the teamwork drives you to push harder.
Whether your goal is to move pain-free, regain your strength, lose weight, or just feel better in your skin, we’ve got your back.
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need a plan — and a crew to back you.
